National Doughnut Day

Celebrate National Doughnut Day, the first Friday in June!

Powered, glazed, iced or filled, doughnuts come in many delicious forms.
So it's no surprise tht they have their own holiday - National Doughnut Day,
held the first Friday in June.  But there's more to this day than just doughnuts.

During World War I, Salvation Army workers, many of them women, traveled
overseas to provide aid and comfort to U.S. servicemen.  In addition to
writing letters, mending clothes and serving home cooked meals, the
volunteers prepared fresh, hot doughnuts for soldiers on the front lines.

Although the doughnuts were a welcome treat for hungry troops on limited
rations, their main purpose was to provide cheer and a taste of home.
The fried confections were a hit with the men, who began referring to the
Salvation Army volunteers as "doughnut girls" or "doughnut lassies".
Over time, the doughnut became a symbol of the organization's service
to the military.

In 1938, the Salvation Army held its first National Doughnut Day in
Chicago in order to raise money for social service programs during the
Great Depression.  It then continued its tradition of serving doughnuts
to troops in World War II.

Today, the holiday is a celebration of both the delicious treats and the
volunteers who served them to soldiers in battle.  Many doughnut shops
hand out free doughnuts on this day, with some encouraging patrons to
make a donation to the Salvation Army in recognition of the day's origins.

Yes, you can eat donuts on Friday.....it's for a cause!

At George's Custom Towing we're all for tradition!

Protect Your Family on the Road

Are you getting ready for a summer vacation, please stay alert on the road!

Sleep deprivation or fatigue is equal to a .08 alcohol level.
From 2009 - 2012, there's been an increase in fatal crashes involving large trucks.

The only way to protect yourself is to be overly aware while on the road and
learning a few defensive driving tactics to keep you safe.

Some things to be on the lookout for:
  • Turning with a wide radius.
  • Straddling the center of the road or lane marker
  • Almost striking an object or other vehicle.
  • Weaving or zigzagging across the road.
  • Driving on other than a designated roadway.
  • Swerving or abruptly turning away from a generally straight course.
  • Turning abruptly or illegally.
  • Driving slower than 10 mph below speed limit.
  • Stopping without cause in a traffic lane.
  • Stopping inappropriately (other than in lane).
  • Drifting or moving in a straight-line at a slight angle to the roadway.
  • Erratic braking.
  • Driving into opposing or crossing traffic.
  • Signaling that is inconsistent with driving actions.
  • Slow response to traffic signals (sudden stop, delayed start).

100 miles per Gallon

Did anyone happen to see the Lost Inventions article
that scrolled across the computer yesterday?

Boggles the mind......truly does!

One of the inventions was called The Ogle Carburetor which inventor
Tom Ogle built in the 1970's.  He came up with a way to take
pressurized gasoline and turn it into a vapor and injected it into
the firing chamber - yielding 113 miles per gallon.  Can you imagine?

Talk about fuel efficient vehicles!

Unfortunately, Tom Ogle took his invention to his grave.

You can read his story here:  Tom Ogle

Leaves a mind to wonder...........
